Living Gabicce
The History
Text from “I murè” by E. Galluzzi
Once apon a time, Gabicce, provided jobs on the “catulghine” boats for the few fishermen of the area. With the passing of time, a new type of fishing had taken foot: “purac" (vongole). Summer evenings were spent dancing, to the son of “a òrgana” outside the “Triumph from Nando” bar on the beach, now known as “The Bussola” restaurant. Not to scorn the famous hike to Mount Gabicce to spend an evening, in a tavern, then to the sophisticated Eden Rock, home to the sound of the same music loved by all.
Winter was spent going to Gabicce walking along the “pidagna”, a shaky little bridge not wider than a little more than a meter, that joined the two sides of the channel situated after the “Squero”. To facilitate the transit of beachcombers and other events during the summer, one could work at the port with a ferry boat with a “volontaria" rate. All was managed from the old “Rimig” of Gabicce that local called Charon by name.
For the remaining months of the year, in spring and autumn, the local barbers (Gigin d' zucaren, Fabol, Mario d' Ivo, Lulén) started the tradition, to which many other took part, of dedicating Monday to the passing of the afternoon at Mount Gabicce in the hopes of haning a nice hike to the top on the rocky, narrow mountain path.
Rich tourism has lifted Gabicce’s poor veiling, and has covered it with vivid enamel allowing it to splendor in pearly light over the panorama, a splendid meeting between sky, sea and hill that only mother nature knows to create.
GABICCE MARE TODAY:
Gabicce Mare, awarded the “
Bandiera Blu” award, offers to all its guests the beauties of a crystal sea along with a splendid panorama from the top of Mount Gabicce. Gabicce Mare is part of the
Natural Park of San Bartolo. It is situated near the famous
Rocca Malatestiana of Gradara (enjoy the characteristic mini train or practical bus ride to get to the site) where Dante Alighieri writes about
Paolo and Francesca’s famous love story. Each week numerous tourists visit Gradara to catch sight of the historic traditions demonstrated through fun activities.
